28 Feb 2010. The eighth edition of the annual Kilimanjaro Marathon begins as usual from the town of Moshi in northern Tanzania. In addition to the standard 42.2 km marathon there is also a 21.1 km half marathon. Both events begin and end at Moshi stadium and involve a gradual climb to Mweka on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The marathon is supported by the Tanzania Tourist Board, the Tanzania Amateur Athletics Association and the International Association of Athletics Federations and typically attracts runners from Tanzania, Kenya and beyond. 28 Nov 2009. The charity Orphans' Foundation Fund was established in 2002 to encourage the pooling of resources by orphanages in Tanzania. Together with Wheels of Action it is hosting the Orphan Games in Arusha, a sporting event which encourages orphaned children to achieve and to interact with their peers in a supportive and understanding environment. Described by the charity as “a means of gathering, inspiring and empowering underprivileged youth through athletic activities”, the event is open to all and the public is asked to come along and support the children. more
Handel’s Messiah at the Selian Hospice

10 Oct. Organised by the Selian Hospice, this special concert is sure to attract media coverage and generate much-needed funds for medical supplies. The event features ten choirs from the Arusha area, all of whom perform sections from Handel’s Messiah, as well as a traditional piece. In between recitals there will be brief presentations, including many testimonials from families, with the theme “Discovering your Voice”. The grand finale is guaranteed to impress the audience as all ten choirs combine to sing the Hallelujah Chorus in Kiswahili. One of the three main hospitals in the Arusha region, the Selian Hospice has served the community for 50 years by providing care to the local Maasai population. more
Cycling Tanzania with International Childcare Trust

2-11 Oct 2009. Thirty intrepid cyclists have the chance of experiencing an African safari by bicycle, as well as raising money for the International Childcare Trust (ICT). ICT is a small, yet highly organised UK charity that works in direct partnership with local organisations in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and India to ensure the right of children to education and a healthy, happy childhood. The 300 km ride starts in Dar es Salaam and continues through Saadani national park to the foot of the Uluguru mountains outside Morogoro. Cyclists are assured of adventure as they camp under the stars by night and travel through game reserves and local communities by day. The cycle ends appropriately with a visit to an ICT-supported children's project. more

14 October 2009. The fifth annual VIP Marathon, organised by The Arusha Track and Field Club, will take place on 14 October. The event is being held in memory of Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who served as prime minister and then as president of Tanzania from just before the country's independence in 1961 until he retired in 1985. Starting from the Impala Hotel and finishing at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge, the 20 km marathon will see seasoned athletes such as Christopher Isegwe, Dr Makando, Fabian Joseph, Francis and Samson Ramadhani partake in an event organisers say stands for maintaining peace and harmony. Also included is a 5 km children's walk which starts at Usa River Police Station and finishes at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge. 14 October is Nyerere day and a public holiday in Tanzania. more

EDCTP at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge

12-14 October 2009. The Fifth EDCTP (European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership) Forum will be held at Arusha's Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge. The theme of the forum is "Fighting HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria: One World, One Partnership". According to the official statement the meeting "will focus on the outcome and progress of EDCTP funding efforts in research and capacity strengthening activities in sub-Saharan Africa... reflecting the global call for all partners and stakeholders to work together to contain and possibly rid the world the scourge of these diseases of poverty." The forum has developed into one of Africa's major conferences on poverty-related diseases (PRDs) and is held every two years. More details can be found on www.edctpforum2009.org more

5-7 June 2009. Annual travel and tourism trade fair organised by the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) and the Tanzania Tourist Board. Over 250 industry representatives from Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Belgium, United Kingdom and China are to attend the three-day event, this year at its tenth edition. more
