Food And Agriculture: Tanzanian farmers to get help from FAO
Tuesday, November 10th 2009Farmers in Tanzania are to benefit from a project of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to improve production and get their produce to market.
The German-sponsored scheme intends to help Tanzania move from subsistence to commercial agriculture to respond better to the demands of consumers and not just of individual households, and therefore to improve the availability of food at national level.
Under the project, local farmers will get training and technical assistance in farm management and marketing techniques and they will also be encouraged to join producers’ groups to share information and contacts.
The project comes as the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, an activity of USAID, reports that over 1.5 million Tanzanians particularly in the north and north-eastern parts of the country currently do not have enough to eat.
