Education: Arusha lacks secondary school places

Sunday, January 10th 2010

Secondary schools in Arusha are so short of places that about 7,000 children may be left out of the Form One intake in 2010.

This is partly because of a lack of classrooms but also because a large number of high-flying children, who want to go on to secondary education, are coming out of excellent primary schools in the Arumeru area (comprising of Arusha-rural and Meru districts).

Arumeru has 51 secondary schools, the most in the Arusha Region, but it is estimated that it needs over 70 new classrooms to cope with the 2010 secondary school intake. About 60 classrooms funded by parents are already under construction.
