City: Arusha aims for city status

Saturday, January 23rd 2010

Arusha may finally get its long-awaited official upgrade from municipal town to city, which has been in the administrative pipeline for over five years. Deputy minister for local governments and regional administration, Aggrey Mwanri, has called on the leadership of Arusha and neighbouring districts to speed up the process, says the Arusha Times.

According to Mwanri, central government is still awaiting proposals from the districts, despite the claims of Arusha District Commissioner Raymond Mushi that they have already been sent to the Regional Consultative Committee (RCC). It is thought that delays are due to disagreements over boundary lines for the proposed city.

Arusha is second only to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania for the generation of revenue and is the hub of the country’s northern safari circuit. It is also the headquarters of the East African Community (EAC) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It is thought that city status will help attract funding from central government to improve infrastructure.
